Dan Covel - Manhattan Jiu Jitsu

Career

Dan Covel has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2002. He also holds a Black Belt in Judo.

On and off the mats, he is a genuinely nice guy with a solid sense of humor, approachable personality, and admirable work ethic. He is best known for his infamous “Black Magic” closed guard, which is highlighted by his previous and on going DVD releases under Digitsu.

Continuing to triumph in the trenches, Dan is eager to teach and coach students in what he not only considers his passion, but his life’s work and is currently accepting students of any level or curiosity.

About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi), mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, and self-defense sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling"). Additionally, a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling, with emphasis on ground fighting. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught by a number of individuals. BJJ eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of Judo through Carlos and Hélio Gracie (who passed their knowledge on to their extended family) as well as other instructors.
